drawedCAST is an illustrated (enhanced) podcast, hosted by cartoonist James Spencer & photographer Ben Lariviere. The audio of each episode is complimented by a series of drawings by James Spencer.

Hey Everybody! Ben here.

James and I want to thank everybody for your support for the show so far. We have big hopes, but we also want to make a product that’s worthwhile, which is why we haven’t released episode two quite yet.

Just to keep you all in the loop, episode two and three have been recorded and edited (we’re really excited to have you hear them), but we’re delaying the release because we’re in the process of reformatting the show. After going through the whole process of producing episode one, we think that hour-long audio podcasts work so well because they’re non-intrusive and you’re able to listen to them in the background while doing other things. We like that and we think we’ve accomplished that with episode one, except for that the illustrations seem to get in the way. We think that maybe the drawings get in the way of it being a non-intrusive form of background entertainment, but demands your attention, without being constant visual stimulation.

We’re torn because we like the hour-long background chats, but we also want to keep the illustrated aspect of drawedCAST intact. Because of this, we’re experimenting with illustrated “Shorts” - which are 5-10 minute illustrated stories. To try it out, we put our “Hallowe’en” Special from episode one on YouTube:

We’re really happy with how well the story aspect of this segment gave the illustrations a lot of purpose.

So, we want to hear from you. Do you think drawedCAST would work if we were to continue the hour-long episodes with far fewer drawings and then started to add in shorts, where the illustrations are closer together, making the product feel more like an animation?
